Getting ready for Round #2 on 5/4/2009

I am taking the next few days to reflect on what happened, and didn't happen, in the last round. I wanted to ask myself a few questions before I blindly go forward into another challenge.

The question I asked was:

What have you learned from the last 18 weeks, so it won't block your progress in this next challenge?

When I finish it up I will post it.

I have also been seeing many people with some very good physical changes. I ask myself what did those people do that many others did not? Is it dedication, focus, determination, or something else. I think it may be a big helping of all three ingredients that makes up this challenge stew.

I have learned that going to the gym everyday does not make you lose weight. It all revolves around being attentive to what you put in your face. Did you have an extra extra helping on free day? Did free day spill over to another day? Are your versions of the portion rule a little bigger than they should be? If so, that may be the root of what went wrong.

Even using the portion rule, a pound of fat still is 3500 calories. If you want to lose weight you need to take in less than you burn (a deficit). Do you know what your body needs to maintain itself each day (BMR)? This combined with your daily activity level determines what you need. You need to eat an average of 500 calories per day less to lose one pound of fat per week. Are you doing it? I am not trashing the portion rule, but I am just saying that if it is not working for you then you need to figure out why. Most people don't make a cake from scratch by just pouring the flour from the box into the bowl. They use measuring devices to help them get the exact result they desire. Think about it. Bottom line is if one way is not working there are other choices you can use.

One last thing....

Counting calories sucks, I know. Try this though... Do it only on your free day. Track your calorie intake on your free day. Remember that 3500 calories equals one pound of fat. Maybe you'll re-think how you approach your free day this time around. It could lead to a more noticeable change in pictures and confidence.

The bells ringing, Round #2 is about to start...Let's get ready to rumble!

DING!! DING!!!
